Helping writers to nurture their stories and improve their craft

“I found Rupert’s expertise on both screenwriting and the novel really inspiring whilst studying for my MSt at Cambridge. When I went on to submission to publishers his practical advice was invaluable

  • My name is Rupert Wallis, I’m a novelist and screenwriter. I also teach on the Master’s in Creative Writing programme at Cambridge University. As well as working with writers at the beginning of their careers, I help established authors and screenwriters.

Storytelling is an instinctive tool for making sense of the world. As a writer I’m excited when an idea takes root and a story wants to be told. It feels not only a natural response to life but a vital one.

But telling a story well is hard. It requires graft and craft. It also demands resilience. Writers have moments of great insight and creative exhilaration, but they also experience deep crises about their work that can feel insurmountable.

For writers at the beginning of their careers, self-doubt can feel particularly acute when grappling with how best to tell a story.

The act of writing is by far the best way to learn how to become a better storyteller. It’s why many established writers have stories sitting in a drawer that will never see the light of day. I know I have.

Through my teaching practice at Cambridge University, I have a lot of experience in drawing the best out of writers at the start of their careers, guiding them to make better creative decisions, and encouraging them to become more resilient. Learning one’s craft takes time but, as a story consultant, I offer a supportive and bespoke approach, working with a writer’s particular strengths and weaknesses, to complement and quicken that process.

I offer support to experienced writers, too. Talking through creative problems with someone else can be invaluable for finding solutions that can feel out of reach, especially when working to a contractual deadline.

Whatever your writing experience or ambitions for your project please do get in touch to find out how I can help you, whether solving a story problem, helping develop your craft, or providing advice about your writing and career.

A true empathic position operates not from knowing what someone is feeling but from wanting to know. I would love to find out what your struggles are as a writer to suggest how best I can help.
